About Us Virtual Medicine was established in 2002 by founding members Dr Colin Carbis and Joe Mastro. The initial goal was to test the theory that the state of ones mind has a profound impact on their perception of pain, anxiety levels and overall wellbeing. That immersing the subject in a virtual controlled environment and communicating directly with the subconscious mind could bring about changes in beliefs and behaviour, to positively impact their physical and mental health. Early testing in hospitals revealed such favourable results that full clinical trials were instigated. Leading pain specialists in burns units and public hospitals in Australia and the USA conducted their own independent trials. The resulting data revealed that VRT had a statistically significant impact on pain and anxiety levels. With this data in hand, Virtual Medicine set about generating programs for a range of conditions in consultation with experts in each area of therapy to ensure the programs were of the greatest possible efficacy. DR Colin Carbis DR Carbis' early career began in animal health where he was constantly astounded by the profound impact that an animal's mental state had on its physical wellbeing. Animals in stressful conditions generally suffered poor health and reduced life spans. Animal welfare became a crusade which eventually lead him to study the human condition and the correlation between a person's mental state and their physical health. His research reinforced his initial suspicion that the subconscious mind (or limbic system) was the key to opening communication between the mind and body. Three significant points came to light.
This raised the question of how best to communicate with the subconscious mind. Traditional hypnosis was the first method tested. While this provided some very good results, traditional hypnosis relied on verbal communication. This means communicating with the subconscious mind via the conscious mind. The conscious mind acts as a filter and decides what information is relevant and what it believes is not. This conscious filtering system makes communicating messages which differ from the current beliefs and behavioural responses very difficult. A far more effective communication method is to subliminalise the messages and communicate directly with the subconscious mind (or limbic system). In a virtual environment, this can be done very effectively. Using a range of non verbal communication methods, such as visual metaphors, binaural beats signals, colour therapy, sensory deprivation and fixation, a much deeper state altered consciousness can be attained and communication can take place directly with the subconscious mind and bring about positive changes to the current thought patterns. Joe Mastro specializes in multimedia design and communications. An I.T. Graduate with a creative/artistic slant, his role was to take the initial concept of Virtual Reality Therapy from an idea to a functioning reality. In 2002 that goal was achieved and the first prototype was produced and ready for testing. Joe is a highly skilled Design and Communications professional with a strong customer focus. Over 8 years experience and expertise in the management, development and delivery of web based communications tools for a wide range of multinational companies, ranging from IT through to the pharmaceutical industry. Research and development into the subliminal audio and visual content was a separate project which proved more intensive than the device itself. However, once this technology was applied to the program content, the vast improvement in efficacy of the therapy made the journey worthwhile. Since that initial prototype, the VRT unit has undergone six model revisions and has been commercially available since 2004. Click here to locate your nearest VRT clinic.
