Virtual Medicine Hits Adelaide

Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) was introduced to ACA members at a full day "Super Workshop" over the weekend and the response was phenomenal. The group in attendance was very receptive and immediately saw the potential in a technology that could benefit patients in a wide range of therapeutic areas.

Special guest Susan Sandy, a counsellor who runs two practices in Melbourne's northern suburbs generously volunteered her time to visit the group and share her experiences with VRT. Susan gave a very open and frank talk about the state of her practice prior to the introduction of VRT and the impact it has made in the three months since adopting the technology.

"I went from regularly having to pay rent on an empty consulting room, to now having a full appointment book, with the next available timeslot four weeks out."

Susan also works part time as a school counsellor, but is now planning on giving up her job to concentrate on her private practice full time.

"I'm actually about to order a second VRT unit so that I can keep up with the growing demand".

Philip Armstrong (CEO of the ACA) also gave a powerful talk about the state of the counselling industry and his strong belief that the way forward for counsellors is to focus on providing the services that the community needs in the way that only counselors can.

"We need to stop focusing on the rebate issue. The survival of our industry does not and cannot depend on it".

He went on to add "We must better understand our niche in this industry and make a paradigm shift in the way we see ourselves"

Philip then explored a wide range of marketing strategies design to increase community awareness and the ways in which cousellors can have a significant impact on key social issues.

The day ended with a hands-on demonstration of the VRT unit where attendees were invited to play with the technology and see for themselves the potential therapeutic benefits it offered.
